Donald Trump’s midterm setback has been turned into a provocative anti-American spectacle in Tehran, where footage circulated by Iranian media showed a man wearing a Trump mask being symbolically hanged in a public display at Tajrish Square. The mock execution came as Democrats captured both chambers of Congress, dealing Republicans a major political setback after a campaign in which Trump made himself central to the vote. But interviews with Tehran residents showed little expectation that Democratic victories would fundamentally transform Washington’s approach towards Iran. One resident argued that “America’s overall policy” remains unchanged regardless of which party controls power, while another described the election result as an opportunity for Iran to take a firmer position. Iran’s message after the US vote therefore carries two strands: mockery of Trump’s political defeat, but scepticism that a Democratic Congress means the confrontation with Washington is over.
